Safety Tips for Handling Power Tools

Power tools are heavy duty pieces of machinery that must be used with care to ensure nobody gets hurt. Many homeowners often use power tools for DIY renovations overlooking the dangers they can pose. If you don’t use or maintain a power tool properly, they can cause serious injury. People often get complacent or misuse the tools.

PPE

Personal protective equipment or PPE must always be worn when using power tools. Safety equipment such as goggles and gloves are there to protect us from harm. If something goes wrong when using a power tool, PPE can save you from a serious, life changing injury. If you are operating an angle grinder, good quality thickness planers, air compressor or any other type of power tools, it is essential that you wear PPE.

Complacency

Most accidents happen in the home when people get complacent and fail to take the necessary precautions to keep themselves safe. Some of us rush jobs to meet a deadline without going through the right safety steps. Even if you are a skilled operator and you have used the power tool on numerous occasions, it is important to stay vigilant and not allow yourself to become complacent.

Plan Ahead

If you are planning a home DIY project, it is essential to think ahead and take all the necessary precautions. Power tools operate at high speeds and when something goes wrong, there is little time to react. Unexpected events are the main reason why so many DIY enthusiasts get injured using power tools for home renovations. If you plan poorly and you have little to no experience using a power tool, there is a greater chance that something will go wrong.

Proper Handling

If you have never used a power tool, take some time to understand proper handling techniques. There are plenty of useful sites and YouTube channels dedicated to safe practice. You should always maintain your tools and keep them in great condition for best performance. Your work area should be clear of people and any other objects that could cause problems, especially sharp items.

When using power tools at home, it is vitally important to prepare your work area, use PPE and not become complacent. The moment you take a power tool for granted you put yourself and others around you at risk of injury. The power tools you are using should be fitted with guards and safety switches as they are extremely hazardous.
